You Already Have a Liturgy 🙏
Is it forming you well?

Written by Dave Matthews, 3:04 Minute Read Time
What hits your mind first thing most mornings?
Is it “Where’s my phone..?” “What time is it..?” “What do I need to get done today..?”
Let’s be honest. Most of us wake up and immediately start reacting. We respond to emails, to pressure, to timelines, and to everyone else’s expectations. And somewhere in the middle of all that noise, we forget to ask:
What kind of person am I becoming?
There is real value in less noise and more reflection. In choosing proactive rhythms over reactive cycles.
For me, that has taken the form of a written prayer I return to a few times a week.
If you grew up in a liturgical church tradition, you might think of this as a personal liturgical prayer.

➞ What Is A Personal Liturgy?
A personal liturgy is a prayer you write yourself. Just a few paragraphs that help you center on who God is, form you into who you want to become, and anchor you in what truly matters.
It is not meant to impress. It is meant to shape.
Think of it as a spiritual anchor for your inner life. When the pace of life is fast, this prayer provides a steady point of return. These words ground you in truth when emotions, fear, ambition, or busyness try to take over.
It is one way I stay grounded in what matters most. It helps me practice what Colossians 3 calls us to: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

➞ Why It Matters
Every one of us already lives by a kind of liturgy.
It might sound like:
“I need to prove myself today.”
“If I don’t get ahead, I’ll fall behind.”
“What I have isn’t enough.”
Have you ever noticed your own internal script?
These phrases are unspoken and often unconscious, but we repeat them constantly. Writing a personal liturgy gives you something better to live by. A prayer shaped by grace rather than pressure. A prayer rooted in identity rather than insecurity.

➞ How To Write Your Own
Here is a simple four-part guide to help you get started:
1) Start with God, tell him who He is.
How do you need to see or relate to Him right now?
(Father, Shepherd, Healer, King…)
2) Acknowledge you are not God.
3) Be honest about your heart.
What do you tend to forget, fear, or chase after?
Confess it. Name it. Say it plainly.
4) Ask for formation.
Who do you want to become in your work, relationships, or habits?
5) Surrender the outcome.
Close with trust. Release your desire to control.
“Use me for your glory.” “Amen.” “Let it be so.”

➞ Here’s An Example
God, you are in control and hold all things together. I do not.
I release my heart, mind, soul, and body to you. You are above all and in all things.
Lord, keep me from being so taken with myself that I forget where I have been and how far your grace has brought me. Let me not measure blessing by what I possess, but by the people you have so kindly woven into my life. Shape my heart to give freely: my time, my gifts, my presence, without fear or calculation, only love. And when others walk away from time with me, may they not leave impressed with who I am, but moved by who you are.
Father, I surrender the outcomes of today to you.

➞ Put It Into Practice This Week
How?
Write your liturgy this week. Use your journal, notes app, or any other method that works for you.
PUT IT SOMEWHERE VISIBLE. (phone background, printed on your mirror, in your office, in your car dashboard, etc.)
Read it aloud a few mornings in a row.
Let it evolve with you as your life and faith change.

➞ A Final Thought
If you read the same prayer three times a week for the next ten years, here is what that adds up to:
3 times per week × 52 weeks = 156 times per year
156 × 10 years = 1,560 times
That is 1,560 intentional moments of alignment with God.
1,560 reminders of who He is and who you are becoming.
You do not just need a prayer to say. You need one to live.
We hope this could be your starting point.
