Developing Your Right Working Climate

Lessons from nature

Written by Tyler Roth, 1:35 Minute Read Time

Not every tree is able to grow everywhere. Each one is uniquely designed to excel in a specific climate. When outside its designed climate, it can struggle.

Similarly, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139, NIV), with a unique fabric that was meant to thrive in the right climate, too.

But it takes time and discernment to uncover the right (and wrong) climates for you.

âžž The Tree

There are over 73,000 species of trees on Earth today, but each can only thrive in certain environments.

  • Baobabs survive in dry African savannas.

  • Redwoods need the foggy, cool climate of the U.S. Pacific coast.

  • Coconut Palms thrive in the warm, salty conditions of the Indian and Pacific ocean coastlines.

For example, a Redwood would not survive in Arkansas. It needs the constant moisture of the Pacific Northwest.

Similarly, researchers estimate there are 2.5 billion people in their 20’s and 30’s, nearly one-third of the world’s population.

And much like trees, each of us are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139, NIV), uniquely designed to thrive in certain climates.

  • A creative flourishes with a pen and paper not with a calculator.

  • An extrovert thrives with a microphone not alone at the library.

  • A caretaker may consider others best in the medical field not pushing product to a retailer.

  • A big thinker moves the needle when given space to dream not when in the details.

  • An analyst enjoys trend-tracking in a spreadsheet more than a writing a short story.

The key is understanding your unique fabric and the who, what, when, and where of how that unique fabric shows up in the workplace. It’s nuanced. It takes deep work and discernment. Time and grace. Success and failure.

But remember, a tree’s design wasn’t an accident. Neither was yours. Lean into it!
